CTW has a tradition for innovative theatre and is one of the area's most adventurous and ambitious amateur dramatic groups. We have been bold enough to look for diversity in our production and our seasons have contained plays in a range of styles - for a full list click on the past shows button.
Our activities include:
Up to 10 main productions a year at the Old Court Theatre, member's evenings, regular play readings, our annual poetry competition (open to all ages, attracting over 1,000 entries each year) and various social gatherings. In 1995, CTW won the Civic Award for Service to the Arts from Chelmsford Borough Council. In 1996 our Youth Group won the same award and in 1997 the then Artistic Director won the award for her personal contribution. We have also been past recipients of an Arts Council National Lottery Grant to develop our audience and membership.
CTW has a tradition of taking its productions to festivals. Our successes away from home have been numerous but particular mention should go to our 2001 production of Moll Flanders, which won the premiere award at the 53rd Skegness Playgoers Festival and was awarded the Adjudicator's Award at the British All Winners final in Woking.
CTW is proud to own its own premesis, The Old Court Theatre, and we are self-financing. Members control and run the premesis and decide what direction the theatre takes. Our season's programme is chosen from plays submitted by members who wish to direct them. All the activities, from acting to serving behind the bar, are carried out on a voluntary basis by the members. We have a large membership and we welcome everyone, regardless of experience or ability - indeed we strive to develop the theatrical skill and knowledge of all members.
Details of all members' evenings, play readings and workshops are published in CTW's monthly newsletter which is sent free to all members.
